Animalia, Animal or Metazoa is a biological kingdom made up of multicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophic living beings, whose cells form biological tissues, capable of responding to the environment (they have nervous tissue) that surrounds them or, in other words, the animals.
Most animals have a body plane that is determined as they mature and, except in animals that metamorphose, this body plane is established early in its ontogeny when embryos. The scientific study of animals is called zoology, which traditionally studied not only living beings with the characteristics described above, but also protozoa. As a result of phylogenetic studies, Protists are considered as a separate group of animals.
The word "animal" is derived from the Latin anima, in the sense of vital breath, and entered the Portuguese language through the word animalis. Animalia is its plural The biological definition of the word refers to all members of the Animalia kingdom, encompassing organisms as diverse as sponges, jellyfish, insects and humans. Colloquially, the term "animal" is often used to refer to all animals other than humans, and rarely to refer to animals not classified as Metazoa. The only animals that are not considered metazoans comprise the three phyla of uncertain systematic position, sometimes grouped in the sub-kingdom Agnotozoa (meaning "unknown animals"), in the Rhombozoa, Orthonectida and Placozoa phyla.
