The mantis, praying mantis, or horse mackerel are insects belonging to the Mantodea Order (from the Greek mantis = prophet; eidos = appearance). They have a generally elongated and narrow (bacilliform) body that varies from 0.8 to 17 cm. There are wide variety of shapes and colors within the group, usually associated with camouflage and mimicry strategies. There are about 2,400 species, 430 genera and 15 families. The largest and most common family of Mantodea is Mantidae. Its popular name comes from the fact that, when it is resting, the previous legs refer to the position of the hands in prayer. They are revered animals in China, and there are even Kung-Fu styles inspired by their movements. There are also records of ancient civilizations, such as Greece, Egypt and Assyria, who considered the mantis an animal with prophetic and supernatural powers, capable of identifying the location of objects, animals or people lost in forests. The mantis flying takes flight from fighter jets, managing to deflect bat attacks, one of its predators, by means of an ultrasonic hearing, performing "dives" during the flight. The behavior of the group is complex, and there seems to be great capacity for memorization and learning. They are insects commonly kept as pets.
