Glacier (Brazilian Portuguese) or glacier (Portuguese European) is a large and thick mass of ice formed in successive layers of compacted and recrystallized snow of various times in regions where snow accumulation is higher than the thaw. It is endowed with movement and moves slowly, due to the gravity, relief below, causing erosion and glacial sedimentation.
The glaciers or glaciers can present extension of several kilometers and thickness that can also reach the band of the kilometers. The snow that remains of a glacial season is called snowy (also uses the German term Firn and French nevé). The snowy is an intermediate step from the passage from snow to ice. As the successive annual layers accumulate, the deep snowfall is compacted, and the granules are refrozen in a single body.
Glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth, and loses in total volume of water only to the oceans. Glaciers cover a vast area of the polar zones but are restricted to the highest mountains in the tropics. In other places in the solar system, Mars's large polar ice caps rival those of Earth.
Among the geological features created by the glaciers are the moraines, or terminal or frontal moraines, medial, bottom and lateral, which are ridges or deposits of rock fragments transported by the glacier; The U-shaped valleys and circuses at their headwaters, and the fringe of the glacier, which is the area where the glacier has recently melted.
