Tiger: The tiger (scientific name: Panthera tigris) is a carnivorous mammal of the family of the felids, that inhabits the Asian continent. Among its subspecies is the largest of all wild cats in the world. They are extremely territorial and solitary animals. Classified as a Predator, the tiger is the third largest terrestrial carnivore, behind only the polar bear and the Kodiak Bear.
Evolution: Living closest relatives of the tiger are the lion, leopard and jaguar, all of which are classified under the genus Panthera. In his face the oldest extinct relative of the tiger, called Panthera zdanskyi, was found in Gansu province, northwest China. This species is considered as a taxon brother of the current tiger and lived about 2 million years ago at the beginning of the Pleistocene. It was smaller than the modern tiger, being the size of a jaguar, and probably did not have the same coat pattern. Although considered more "primitive", it was functionally and possibly ecologically similar to its modern cousin. As Panthera zdanskyi lived in northwest China, it may have been where the lineage of tigers originated. Tigers have grown in size, possibly in response to adaptive radiations of prey species such as deer and bovidae that may have occurred in Southeast Asia during the early Pleistocene.
