In Parliament on 8 May 2019, Minister for Law K. Shanmugam responded to MP Low Thia Khiang’s assertion that the POFMA Bill would allow the Government to amass more powers.
Noting Mr Low’s comment that the Bill would mean that speech would no longer be confined to coffee shops, Minister K. Shanmugam referred to the debate on the Administration of Justice (Protection) Act (AOJPA) in 2016, during which similar comments were made. He noted that AOJPA did not lead to a restriction in ‘coffee shop talk’, three years on.
