The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large cat, a feline in the genus Panthera, and is the only existing Panthera species native to the Americas. The jaguar is the third largest feline species after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Americas. The current range of the jaguar extends from the southwest United States and Mexico in much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Although there are single cats living now in the western United States, the species has been extirpated in much of the United States since the early twentieth century.
This spotted cat more closely resembles the leopard physically, although it is generally larger and of a more resistant construction and its behavioral and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the tiger. While dense forest is your preferred habitat, the jaguar will vary on a variety of wooded and open terrains. Preferred habitats are usually marshes and wooded areas, but jaguars also live in forests and deserts. The jaguar is remarkable, along with the tiger, like a feline that likes to swim. The jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic predator with a stalk and ambush at the top of the food chain (a predator at the apex). It is a key species, playing an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating the populations of the animals it hunts. The jaguar has an exceptionally powerful bite, even compared to other large cats. This allows him to pierce the shells of armored reptiles and employ an unusual killing method: bites directly through the skull of the prey between the ears to deliver a fatal bite to the brain. The jaguar is an almost endangered species and its numbers are declining. Threats include habitat loss and fragmentation. Although international trade in jaguars or their parts is banned, the cat is still often killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with farmers and farmers in South America. Although small, its range remains large. Given its historical distribution, the jaguar has a prominent position in the mythology of numerous Native American cultures, including those of the Maya and Aztecs.
