Theraphosidae is a family of spiders, which includes the species known by the common names of tarantulas (Portuguese European) or caranguejeiras (Brazilian Portuguese), which are characterized by having long legs with two claws at the tip, and body covered with bristles. The tarantulas inhabit the temperate and tropical regions of the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. As they grow, they have a phase of skin change called ecdise. Despite the sinister size and appearance, the tarantulas are not dangerous to the human species, since they do not produce toxins harmful to humans, so they are eventually created as pets. One of his defenses are the stinging of his back and abdomen, which irritate the skin of the possible predator.
On average, they reach from 15 cm to 25 cm in length with legs extended, but there are species that can reach up to 30 cm, as is the case of the South American tarantula-giant-bird-eaters (Theraphosa blondi).
Tarantulas have a long life cycle and take from 2 to 5 years to reach sexual maturity. Males usually die after mating, reaching 5 to 7 years of life. Before they become adults, tarantulas have to eat daily, except during their skin change, when there is a fast of on average ten days before and seven days later. When they are adults, they can go for long periods without eating. Cases of longevity of captive females up to 25 years old were recorded.
Tarantulas are solitary and nocturnal animals. They feed on small animals, which in larger species may include small birds, rodents or amphibians. All species of tarantulas exhibit cannibalism.
