The lion is the second largest feline after the tiger, presenting smaller length and weight, but being taller at the withers. It has a short coat and the color is unicolor, ranging from light brown to silvery gray and from yellowish red to dark brown. There are no rosettes and pups and juveniles have spots on the coat. The belly and the medial parts of the limbs are lighter, and the tuft of hairs on the tip of the tail is black. The mane is usually brown, varying in yellowish, reddish tones or darker shades of brown. With age, the mane tends to become darker and may be entirely black. It has a rounded head and short, broad face and rounded ears, the neck is relatively short and the body muscular and well proportioned.
Lions tend to vary in size depending on the subspecies, their environment and distribution area, resulting in a large variation of morphometric records. Individuals in southern Africa tend to be 5 percent heavier than East Africans in general. The largest recorded lion, at nearly 3.6 meters in length (including the tail), was a male shot near Mucsso in southern Angola in October 1973. The heaviest lion known in the wild was a "male eater" slaughtered in 1936 in the vicinity of Hectorspruit in the eastern Transvaal province of South Africa, which weighed 313 kg. Another notably huge male lion, was slaughtered near Mount Kenya, and weighed 272 kg. Lions in captivity tend to be larger than lions in the wild, the heaviest recorded being a male at the 1970 Colchester Zoo in England, named Simba, who weighed 375 kg.
The lion feeds on any prey it can catch, but the diet consists mainly of animals between 50 and 300 kilograms. Asian lion prey are generally smaller than African prey. Among the most significant African species are the impala (Aepyceros melampus), gnu (Connochaetes taurinus), other antelopes (Gazella spp .; Damaliscus spp., Eudorcas spp .; Oryx spp.), Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), buffalo ), zebra (Equus burchellii) and facóquero (Phacochoerus africanus). Chital (Axis axis) consists of the main prey of Asian lions, which can also feed on other species of deer, such as sambar (Russian unicolor). Other prey species include wild boar (Sus scrofa), four-horned antelope (Tetracerus quadricornis), nilgo (Boselaphus tragocamelus), chinkara (Gazella bennetti), Lepus nigricollis, porcupine (Hystrix indica) (Semnopithecus entellus) and the peacock (Pavo cristatus).
A large study with 48 distinct geographic locations in Africa has shown that wildebeest, Cape buffalo, gemsboks, giraffes and common zebras are the most commonly consumed prey. In Asia, a study has revealed that Axis axis accounts for about 80% of the subspecies diet.
